The Department of Building Mechanics as an independent structural unit of the Odessa State Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture has been in existence since September 1951.

Its founder and permanent leader until 1987 was Ihor Prokopovych, Ph.D. in Technical Sciences, Professor, Honored Worker of Science of Ukraine, Honorary Academician of the Russian Academy of Architecture and Building Sciences.

From 1987 to 2013, the department was headed by Ph.D. in Technical Sciences, Professor O. Yaremenko, who put a lot of effort into the development of the department and the academy.

Professor O. Yaremenko developed an applied theory of creep and long-lasting strength of reinforced concrete plane elements and shells with acquired anisotropy due to various resistance of concrete to tensile-compression and crack formation. They have published about 140 scientific papers and 6 manuals. O. Yaremenko was a member of the scientific councils for the defense of the dissertations of OSACEA and the National University of Lviv Polytechnic, and a member of the editorial boards of several scientific journals. He has been awarded the "Excellence in Education of Ukraine" and "For Scientific Achievement" insignia.

From 2013 to 2015, the department was headed by Ph.D. in Technical Sciences, Professor V. Kobrynets. Valentyn Kobrynets. is a student of I. Prokopovych, under whose leadership he defended his Ph.D. thesis in 1973 and continued his scientific and methodological work at our department.

By the decision of the Supreme Administrative Court of Ukraine in 2008, V. Kobrynets was elected professor of the department, and since 2013 he has been acting head of the department.

Since September 2015, the department has been headed by Ph.D. in Technical Sciences, Professor M. Surianinov, a graduate of the Odessa Engineering and Construction Institute. He is the author of 40 textbooks and monographs, as well as 300 scientific articles. The area of scientific interest is «“Numerical methods of structural calculations”.». Under the guidance of Professor Surianinov, eight PhD and two PhD theses were defended.

The staff of the department constantly takes care of increasing the level of scientific, teaching and methodical work in accordance with modern requirements. Not only the talented young people of the department, but also the older generation actively apply innovative technologies in their work.

The laboratory of Computer Mechanics was opened at the department. The work is performed using such well-known software packages as ANSYS, LIRA, Revit, Sofistik, SCAD, Matlab and others.

All this allowed to open the training of specialists of the second (master's) level in 2016 on the educational-professional program «Computer Sciences» in specialty 122 "Computer Sciences" (branches of knowledge 12 "Information Technologies").
  • Pavlo Balduk - Ph.D. in Technical Sciences, Associate Professor, Professor at the Department;

  • Ihor Tvardovskyi - Ph.D. in Technical Sciences, Associate Professor at the Department;

  • Tetiana Kalinina - Ph.D. in Technical Sciences, Associate Professor at the Department;

  • Mariam Bekirova - Ph.D. in Technical Sciences, Associate Professor at the Department;

  •  Olena Yaremenko - Ph.D. in Technical Sciences, Associate Professor at the Department;

  •  Mykola Soroka - Ph.D. in Technical Sciences, Associate Professor, Professor at the Department;

  • Yevhen Yenkov - Ph.D. in Technical Sciences, Associate Professor at the Department;

  • Oleksandr Chuchmai - Ph.D. in Technical Sciences, Senior Lecturer at the Department;

There are five areas of scientific-research work at the department.

  • "Development of numerical-analytical method of boundary elements for modeling and calculation of rod, plate and shell structures".
The results of calculation of rod, plate and shell structures differ from existing higher precision as they are based on the relevant fundamental solution of differential equations.

  • "Analytical, Computer and Experimental Investigations of Reinforced Concrete Structures".
Experimental study of samples: beams, slabs, cross-systems, arches of concrete and fiber-reinforced concrete, which confirmed the efficacy of fiber-reinforced concrete.

  • "Computer Technology in Mechanics."
Modeling and finite-element analysis of constructions, buildings, structures and biomechanical systems using software ANSYS, Sofistik, Revit, LIRA, SCAD. A wide range of systems is covered - rod, plate, shell, combined. Investigate the stress-strain state of structures made of various materials (including sandwich and composite), under static and dynamic loads.

  • "Calculations of buildings and structures at seismic loads".
In cooperation with the Scientific Research Institute, several seismic loads have been calculated. According to the obtained results, appropriate recommendations were given to designers.

  • "Inspection of buildings and structures".
The State Budget for Research of the "Development of Numerical-Analytical Method of Boundary Elements for Modeling and Calculation of Rod, Plate and Shell Structures" with the amount of funding 385 thousand UAH, annually (3 years), is being implemented.

At the department, 3 post-graduate students of the 2nd year of full-time study are working on the dissertation - M. Sydorchuk, T. Makovkina (scientific supervisor Ph.D, Professor M. Surianinov ), V.Vandynskii. (scientific supervisor Ph.D., Professor Yu. Krutii).

They all met the requirements of the curriculum, passed the required exams, and received a recommendation to continue their studies. Applicants for the degree of Candidate of Technical Sciences – T. Yemelianova,or the degree of Doctor of Engineering - Yu.Otrosh, V.Fomin (Scientific advisor Ph.D., Professor M. Surianinov).
