The Department of Physical Education and Sports was founded in 1930, initially as the Department of "Military and Physical Training", according to its name it was engaged in both physical and military training of youth.
G.S. Mykhailichenko became the first head of the updated department. During this period to the department were admitted: Honored USSR trainer O.V. Filimovych and G.S. Mikhnevskyi; coaches of the highest category: F.P. Semashko, Е.Т. Semenova e.t.c.
Since 2008 the games between student`s dormitories of OSACEA has resumed. Chess match-ups are systematically held with the Odessa team of journalists at the OSACEA Rector's Cup. Since 2009 match meetings have been held for the OSAECA Rector's Cup of the following types: volleyball, basketball, athletics, futsal, fencing, rugby - – 7.
In 2010, by the forces of the department in the Academy was opened сhess - checkers club. The international chess master, assoc. prof. O.Kalinin teaches and trains students.
The sports leaders of the national team took part in the 13th Universiade of Ukraine, where they took the first place among 128 higher educational institutions. The 31 athletes were participated.
In 2018, the Academy won the 1st place in the Twenty-sixth Regional Spartakiad of the Defense Academy of Odessa. 359 students from 22 kinds of the Spartakiad program took part in the competitions, among them 10 masters of sport, 42 candidates for masters of sports and athletes of the first sports category, 6 candidates for the national team of Ukraine and 19 candidates for the youth and junior national teams of Ukraine.
42 athletes of the Academy took part in the championships of Ukraine and international tournaments. Students took the prize places in handball - 1st place, fast chess - 2nd place, badminton - 3rd place.
The student team of the OSACEA of Football became the winner and won the Cup in the football tournament dedicated to the memory of the player of FC "Chernomorets" A. Popychko. The real sporting event at the city level was the holding of a basketball tournament (3x3) dedicated to the memory of Vitalii Vynohradskyi in 2018. The tournament was attended by 35 teams in different age groups: veterans-graduates of the academy, students of the academy, students of schools in Odessa. The Academy's Rectorate has decided to grant the tournament the status of traditional.
According to the results of the sports year, the Department of Physical Education and Sports was recognized as a nominee in the nomination of the newspaper «Evening Odessa» - «Man of the Case».

Educational - methodical work, which is carried out at the department, allows to increase the scientific potential of the personnel and to introduce into the educational process the latest techniques for the training of high-class specialists.

. A library of sports and methodological literature was created.
. Work and study programs have been developed and implemented in the educational process.
Over the last 5 years, five teaching aids have been developed and published by the department's teachers:
- "Teaching Methods for Students Who Study Ju-Do Struggle" (senior lecturer A.Kravtsova);
- “Moving games and relays at physical education classes” (senior lecturer V. Bortovsky);
- "Collection of methodological developments for conducting physical education classes with full-time students" (all teachers, edited by senior professor V. Bortovsky);
- Methodical guide on the topic: "Organization of training classes for special medical groups" 2016 (senior lecturer A.Kravtsova);
- Methodical guide on the topic: "Fitness as an integral part of athletes training", 2017 (senior lecturer A.Kravtsova);
